India is preparing for an early Vice Presidential election following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar in July. The Election Commission has scheduled the polls for September 9, 2025, with nominations closing on August 21 and scrutiny taking place on August 22. Members of both houses of Parliament will cast their votes, and the winner will also take over as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has tasked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President J.P. Nadda with finalising the alliance’s nominee, aiming for a candidate who can ensure stability and effective functioning in the Upper House.
Manoj Sinha

Currently serving as the outgoing Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Manoj Sinha is a veteran politician and administrator. Known for his calm, measured approach, Sinha has been credited with bringing relative stability to Jammu & Kashmir during a sensitive period. A former Union Minister and three-time Member of Parliament from Ghazipur, his administrative acumen, deep understanding of governance, and experience in handling complex political situations make him a serious contender for the Vice Presidency.
V.K. Saxena

As the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, V.K. Saxena has earned a reputation for his hands-on style of governance. With a background as the Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), he has been a strong advocate for rural development and environmental conservation. Saxena’s ability to navigate the often tense political climate in Delhi while focusing on infrastructure and civic improvement gives him credentials that could translate well into the role of Rajya Sabha Chairman.
Harivansh Singh
Currently the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Singh is a seasoned parliamentarian with a background in journalism. Known for his impartial conduct during debates and his ability to maintain decorum in the Upper House, Harivansh commands respect across party lines. His experience in the very chamber he would chair as Vice President provides him with an insider’s understanding of parliamentary processes and the nuances of legislative functioning.
Thawar Chand Gehlot
Presently the Governor of Karnataka, Thawar Chand Gehlot is among the senior-most leaders in the BJP, having served as Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment. With a career spanning several decades in both state and national politics, Gehlot’s deep legislative experience and record of championing social welfare initiatives make him a name that combines seniority with substance.
Acharya Devvrat: The Strongest Card?
Among all the names being discussed, Acharya Devvrat stands out as the most likely choice. Currently the Governor of Gujarat and formerly the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, he comes from a background in education and social reform, having served for over three decades in the Arya Samaj’s gurukul system. His tenure in constitutional positions has been marked by efforts in rural upliftment, environmental protection, and value-based governance.

Devvrat’s clean image, non-partisan reputation, and ability to bridge divides make him an attractive option for a role that demands impartiality and authority. His blend of administrative experience and moral leadership could set a tone of stability and fairness in the Rajya Sabha, which will be crucial in an era of often polarised political discourse.
What Lies Ahead
As the nomination deadline approaches, the NDA’s decision will be closely watched. Whether they choose a political veteran like Manoj Sinha or Thawar Chand Gehlot, an administrator like V.K. Saxena, a parliamentary expert like Harivansh Singh, or a consensus-building figure like Acharya Devvrat, the selection will shape the functioning of Parliament for years to come.
